The Dr. Bernard Anderson Foundation was created in honor of the late American surgeon and philanthropist Dr. Bernard Anderson, and his wife, Emawayish Gerima, a community activist and the first chairwoman of the Ethiopian Nurses Association. Our vision is dedicated to completing the work that Dr. Anderson and Mrs. Gerima began, finishing construction on a new hepatobiliary medical facility that will provide excellent free medical aid to the neediest in Ethiopia and beyond, and to encourage public knowledge about the types of hepatobiliary disease, symptoms, treatment and prevention.

Our Mission
This 70-bed hepatobiliary hospital in Gondar, Ethiopia will address the unmet medical needs in Ethiopia, build a center of excellence, endeavor to advance research, and to increase awareness of hepatobiliary diseases. This facility will serve to alleviate the chronic shortage of medical establishments in the remote area of Ethiopia, meet the unmet medical needs of the community, and provide service to the neediest, free of charge.

In addition, the hospital will offer private health care in hepatobiliary medicine for those who can afford it, and use the funding to pay for pro-bono patient care.
